Fall is just around the corner. Autumn is the perfect time to do maintenance on your Mississauga home; take advantage of the cooler weather to roll up your sleeves and take care of all the little things that keep the house in tip-top shape. As a top Mississauga real estate agent, I often tell my clients that it doesn’t matter if you’re not ready to sell your home; just do the little things to maintain it. Maintence keeps your home ready for the market, if you ever decided it’s the right time to sell. With that in mind, here are the top three maintenance tips that I give my clients on how to keep their homes in the best shape possible.

Keep your roof, gutters and downspouts clean. During my time as a Mississauga real estate agent, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone out to value a property and found water damage because the homeowner hasn’t taken the time to clear debris from the gutter in the fall and spring. This becomes a real problem when water backs up and overflows in the same spot over and over again, which causes damage to the affected area of the roof and eaves, and can lead to damage in the interior. Clearing debris from your roof also gives you an opportunity to inspect your roof and shingles.

Fix leaks. Water damage is one of the worst things to deal with in or outside your home. Keeping faucets and pipes maintained is really important; doing so prevents water damage to your home, and it saves you money on your water bill. As you’re heading from fall into winter, it’s especially important to make sure that the outside faucets aren’t leaking. If ice forms around the faucet, it could end up damaging the exterior of your house.

Change your filters. If you have central heat and air, fall is the perfect time to change the filters on these items. If you have window air conditioners, it’s also a good time to place some type of plastic or waterproof material over the unit in order to seal it for the winter. Other filters around your home should also be changed. Consider changing the filter on your refrigerator if you have a water dispenser or ice maker. Clothes dryers and any room fans that have filters should also be checked and changed. Not only does this help you maintain your home, it helps keep your family safe and healthy.
